E. Coli Tainted Meat
Topps Meat Company has recalled 21.7 million pounds of ground beef, at risk for the E. coli bacteria. The second largest meat recall in U.S. history covers a wide range of frozen hamburger patties and other products manufactured over the last year. Meat recalled has a "sell by date" or "best if used by date" between September 25, 2007, and September 25, 2008. All recalled products will have a U.S. Department of Agriculture establishment number of EST 9748, which is located on the back panel of the package and/or in the USDA legend. The recall was based on an sample of meat contaminated with the E. coli O157:H7 strain
E. coli O157:H7 is a food-borne bacterium that can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, dehydration and in extreme cases kidney failure. Symptoms start about 7 days after you are infected with the germ. It usually clears up within a week in adults, but can be deadly in infants, older people and those with compromised immune systems. People who are infected with E. coli are very contagious.
An investigation found inadequate E.coli safety measures at the Topps Meat Co. plant in New Jersey, where the beef was processed. Attorney Roger W.
